The Hayfield Hawks and the Madison Warhawks were this year's Bookjammin Hoops Tournament Champions. The tournament was held at Lake Braddock and Madison High Schools.

Special Olympics Exhibition

The Bookjammin Hoops Tournament provides competition for eight boys and eight girls teams. A number of Washington Metropolitan area teams have and will be competing against teams from outside the area.

James River girls and Paul VI boys were the 1999 Bookjammin champions. The James River Rapids, led by Liz Smith and Alycia Stevens scoring 15 and 11 points, respectively, defeated Centreville 47 to 34 to capture the title. All tournament team selections, Dennis Bowden, with 22 points and 5 assists, and Robert Little, with a double, double led Paul VI to a decisive 70 to 46 victory over Lake Braddock.

Proceeds from the Tournaments are used for educational scholarship grants for deserving student athletes including players, trainers, cheerleaders, and managers, who have achieved educational excellence and who are involved with the sport of basketball. Students from the 60 high schools officiated by Cardinal Basketball Officials Association, Inc. in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

Since its inception, the Bookjammin Hoops Tournament has awarded more than $65,000 in scholarships. Over the last seven years, our winners have demonstrated extensive social and extracurricular participation and without exception have far exceeded the requisite 3.5 GPA. Candidates are evaluated based upon the following criteria:

*Academic Record
*Involvement in extracurricular activities
*Completion of an essay
*Recommendations from coaches and teachers

The Bookjammin Hoops Tournament objectives are:

*Provide educational scholarships to deserving students involved with interscholastic basketball;
*Provide financial support to existing academic programs at participating schools;
*Promote the principles of good sportsmanship; and
*Provide competition among schools that might otherwise not be available.
