Calvert High School defeated Annapolis High School 34-22 to become the Maryland Class 3A State Champions. Calvert has never won a state championshp let alone even make it to the playoffs but this year was special in many ways. Coach Jerry Franks who joined the school in 1997 underwent heart surgery early in November and the players dedicated the rest of the season to him. He was not able to be on the sidelines so Coach Franks watched as the Cavaliers battled it out from up in the press box. The kids played an outstanding game and proved to the entire state that the Southrn Maryland Athletic Conference is for real and will continue to be for a long time.
