In an amazing game at Byrd Stadium emotions were running high all the way down to the final play where Gaithersburg HS won over Sherwood HS 24-21. Both teams are from Montgomery County and had played earlier in the season, that game also went to Gaithersburg in double overtime and many thought that the 4A Championship was going over as well. Senior RB Semaj Richardson made sure that didn't happen with a 13 yard TD pass from Junior Robert Graham with 6 seconds left on the clock. That catch gave the Trojans the 3 point lead and the Championship trophy that eluded them the year prior. Richardson scored all of Gaithersburgs points, 3 TD's on runs and the game winning pass, while they failed to score any PAT's. On the Sherwood side of the ball Senior Paul Lucas scored all 3 TD's on rushes, the first being a 44 yard run in the first quarter. Clayton Mullinhoff was a perfect 3 for 3 in the PAT's. The win was Gaithersburgs third State Championship with the other 2 coming in 1986 and 1992. This was also the only time in state history that a first year head coach (Kreg Kephart) has gone undefeated and won the state title.
