The Centreville Wildcats defeated the Deep Creek Hornets 28-26 to claim their first Football State Championship since the creation of the school 12 years ago. The Wildcats jumped out to a 28-0 lead and held on in an exciting affair that every fan in attendance will remember for a long time.

Deep Creek took the opening kick and drove down the field inside the Centreville 10. On 4th down and goal from inside the one yard line Kevin Foglio drilled Deangelo Hall in the backfield forcing him to fumble the ball into the endzone where Centreville recovered for a touchback. Centreville drove down the field using some big 3rd down passing from QB Nick Smith to move the ball down to the Deep Creek 24 yard line. With 10:52 left in the 2nd Qtr. Smith rolled right on 3rd and 8 and rifled the ball to the right corner of the endzone for his main man Tony Grossman making the score 7-0 Centreville.

Josh Winchester interecepted QB Chris Clifton's 3rd down attempt giving the Wildcats the ball back. Centreville was forced to punt and Chris Hall got off a beauty sending Deangelo Hall back towards his own goal line. After the ball bounced Hall touched it and Centreville's Blake Warren drilled Hall leaving the live ball for Matthew Wood to recover on the 17 yard line. Two plays later Kenneth Tynes took it in from 6 yards out for the Wildcats making the score 14-0.

Centreville forced a Deep Creek punt and the offense was back in business. Smith scrambled and found Grossman for a big 22 yard gain down to the 18. FB Curtis Lewis capped off the drive from 1 yard out making the score 21-0 going into the half.

On Centreville's first possession of the second half they drove it down to the 15 yard line where they faced a 4th and 4. The Wildcats jumped offsides making it 4th and 9 from the 20. Centreville declined at the field goal attempt opting to go for the big play. Smith scrambled right and got rid of the ball just before the Deep Creek defense could get there. Grossman almost sensing his QB was in trouble came back to the football and caught it in the front of the endzone for a touchdown pushing the score to 28-0 with 6:18 left in the 3rd Quarter.

Game over right? Deep Creek didn't think so.

Chris Clifton unloaded down the field for a seemingly covered Josh Hyman. Hyman pulled the ball down over Winchester and trotted the rest of the way into the end zone. The 60 yard bomb made the score 28-7 with 5:23 left in the 3rd.

The Wildcats drove the ball down to the 10 yard line looking for the clinching score as the 3rd Quarter expired. On the first play of the 4th Quarter Smith rushed the ball off the left end. Smith was stripped just before he got to the goal line. The ball rolled into the end zone where Deep Creek recovered for a touchback.

Facing a 3rd and 2 from their own 28 yard line Hall took the hand-off for Deep Creek and burst off right end for an scintilating 56 yard run down to the Wildcat 16. On the next play Clifton hit RB Lawrence Frost on an out route that he took down the sidelines and dove into end zone making the score 28-14 with 10:05 left in the game.

On the ensuing kick-off the Hornets went for an onside kick. Deep Creek executed the play perfectly and recovered on the Centreville 48 yard line. With 8:00 left, from the 35 yard line, Clifton launched a ball deep down the sidelines into the end zone. Centreville CB Marcus Hamilton had perfect coverage but Hyman dove from behind Hamilton and caught the ball fully extended for the touchdown. The extra point attempt for Deep Creek was no good making the score 28-20 after the remarkable catch.

The Hornets next onside kick went out of bounds giving the ball back to the Wildcats. On 3rd and 6 Smith was intercepted by Deangelo Hall on his own 6 yard line. The Wildcats stopped the Hornets on 4th down giving them the ball back at the 29 yard line with 3:52 left. Smith 4th down pass attempt intended for Lewis fell incomplete and Deep Creek took over on downs at their own 30 yard line with 2:41 remaining on the clock.

Clifton completed a 15 yard pass to James Anderson pushing the ball to the 45. On the next play Clifton scrambled for 20 yards down to the Wildcat 35. Clifton then hit Hall with a 15 yard pass to the Wildcat 20. Mike Tomaselli recorded a sack on Clifton knocking them back to the 27 yard line with 1:23 left. On 2nd and 17 Clifton dropped back and threw a jump ball to his big play guy Hyman. Hyman and Winchester went up for the ball, but Hyman came down with it and the Deep Creek faithful were beside themselves. The score was 28-26 with just 1:17 left on the clock.

Centreville coach Mike Skinner called a time-out and challenged arguably the best defense in the state to make a play here to win the title.

Senior defensive lineman Will Montgomery decided to step up...as Clifton began to roll to the right Montgomery came flying through the line and drilled the Deep Creek Quarterback.

With 1:17 left on the clock Deep Creek's last chance was one more onside kick. Both previous onside kicks had been to the left of the kicking team. The Hornets lined up the same way it had previously but this time the kicker turned and kicked it right where there was a lone Centreville player and two hard charging Hornets. The ball was touched by a total of 6 players by both teams before Brad Meletti finally dove on the ball for the Wildcats sealing the fate of the drained Hornets and bringing home Centreville's first ever Football Championship.
