The Centreville Wildcats defeated the Deep Creek Hornets 28-26 to claim their first Football State Championship since the creation of the school 12 years ago. The Wildcats jumped out to a 28-0 lead and held on in an exciting affair that every fan in attendance will remember for a long time.
Deep Creek took the opening kick and drove down the field inside the Centreville 10. On 4th down and goal from inside the one yard line Kevin Foglio drilled Deangelo Hall in the backfield forcing him to fumble the ball into the endzone where Centreville recovered for a touchback. Centreville drove down the field using some big 3rd down passing from QB Nick Smith to move the ball down to the Deep Creek 24 yard line. With 10:52 left in the 2nd Qtr. Smith rolled right on 3rd and 8 and rifled the ball to the right corner of the endzone for his main man Tony Grossman making the score 7-0 Centreville.
The Wildcats drove the ball down to the 10 yard line looking for the clinching score as the 3rd Quarter expired. On the first play of the 4th Quarter Smith rushed the ball off the left end. Smith was stripped just before he got to the goal line. The ball rolled into the end zone where Deep Creek recovered for a touchback.
The Hornets next onside kick went out of bounds giving the ball back to the Wildcats. On 3rd and 6 Smith was intercepted by Deangelo Hall on his own 6 yard line. The Wildcats stopped the Hornets on 4th down giving them the ball back at the 29 yard line with 3:52 left. Smith 4th down pass attempt intended for Lewis fell incomplete and Deep Creek took over on downs at their own 30 yard line with 2:41 remaining on the clock.
Clifton completed a 15 yard pass to James Anderson pushing the ball to the 45. On the next play Clifton scrambled for 20 yards down to the Wildcat 35. Clifton then hit Hall with a 15 yard pass to the Wildcat 20. Mike Tomaselli recorded a sack on Clifton knocking them back to the 27 yard line with 1:23 left. On 2nd and 17 Clifton dropped back and threw a jump ball to his big play guy Hyman. Hyman and Winchester went up for the ball, but Hyman came down with it and the Deep Creek faithful were beside themselves. The score was 28-26 with just 1:17 left on the clock.
Centreville coach Mike Skinner called a time-out and challenged arguably the best defense in the state to make a play here to win the title.
