The Wildcat defense has been tremendous all season and in the semi-finals they faced quite possibly their toughest foe yet. "Superman" Michael Robinson and the Varina Blue Devils who had averaged over 32 points a game entering the semi-finals. The Centreville D was up to the task holding the Blue Devils to just 7 points of offense.

With no score in the second quarter Centreville drove down the field behind the running of Nick Smith and Kenneth Tynes. Smith dented the scoreboard first with a 1 yard touchdwon run.

On the Blue Devils next possession Northern Region Defensive Player of the Year Blake Warren picked off Robinson's pass giving the Wildcats the ball on the 48 yard line. Smith found WR Chris Stanton deep over the middle of the field for a 38 yard gain down to the 11. On 3rd and goal Smith scored from 2 yards out to put the Wildcats up 14-0 with 34 seconds left in the half.

After a good kick-off return the Blue Devils were in business. Robinson scrambled for 32 yards before being knocked out of bounds at the Centreville 36. Centreville was charged with a personal foul tacking on 15 yards. A Robinson completion moved the ball from the 21 to the 6 with only 1 second left. Varina elected to go for 7 and Robinson made the decision pay off, scrambling around the right end eluding several Centreville tacklers and lunging across the goal line for a big score before the half. The extra point was missed making the score 14-6 at the half.

Both teams played some great defense until late in the third quarter when Varina challenged again driving the ball inside the 10 yard line. Centreville held Varina four plays inside the 10 and forced the turnover on downs. LB Tony Alpy made a huge tackle on Robinson on 4th down to finish the defensive stand.

The Blue Devils bounced back stripping the ball from Smith on the Wildcats first play from scrimmage. Defensive Back Rick Denzler scooped up the loose ball and returned it 10 yards for the Varina touchdown. Robinson rushed in the 2 point conversion and the score was tied at 14 with 55 seconds left in the 3rd quarter.

Neither team could move the ball and overtime looked inevitable until Centreville forced a punt with 4:30 left and took over at their own 30. With Smith and Tynes grinding it out Centreville started to take control. The powerful Wildcat offensive line started to wear down the Varina front and the Wildcats were on their way. With 1:53 left on the clock and the ball on the 23 yard line the Wildcat coaching staff made a gutsy call that payed off. They called for a fade to Stanton. Smith dropped back and threw a perfect ball to a wide open Stanton who hauled it in out of the pouring rain for a Wildcat victory and a trip to the State Championship game. The Wildcats will play Deep Creek in the State Championship December 2nd in Richmond at City Stadium.
