The Centreville Wildcats won their third consecutive Northern Region Division 6 title by downing the previously unbeaten Robinson Rams 16-13 in front of a huge crowd at Robinson High School. QB Nick Smith led the way rushing 31 times for 112 yards and 2 touchdowns. Smith went 6-8 passing for 73 big yards. The Centreville defense played great giving up only one score and holding All-Region RB Mike Imoh to only 41 yards.

The Wildcats took their first drive 84 yards on 11 plays and scored with 4:47 left on the clock to go up 7-0. Smith had 7 rushes for 36 yards on the drive, including the 2 yard touchdown run. Kenneth Tynes (12 carries, 69 yards) set up the touchdown by scampering 28 yards down the left sideline to the 6 yard line.

On the first play of the second quarter Smith scrambled and found Tynes on the left side. The hard-hitting Rams defense knocked the ball loose and recoverd on their own 34 yard line. Centreville's defense held the Rams again and got the ball back. With 8:07 left on the clock Smith went for the long ball down the sidelines. Matt Altomare had great coverage on the play tipping the ball into the air where teammate Cary Wade ran under it for an interception on their own 9 yard line. On 3rd down and 2 the fleet footed Imoh took the pitch and was knifing through defenders until a Wildcat helmet knocked the ball loose. Josh Winchester recovered for Centreville on the Ram 25.

After some good Robinson defense and two penalties the Wildcats were backed up to the 32 yard line in a 3rd and 29 situation. Smith went to his main man Tony Grossman (4 catches, 55 yards) down the sidelines for a 28 yard gain down to the Ram 4. On 4th and 1 Tynes was able to power forward for the first and with 1:35 left in the half on third and goal Smith powered in from 2 yards out to put the Wildcats up 14-0 going into the half.

With 8:00 left and the Rams in need of a big play Coach Mark Bendorf grabbed into his bag of tricks. QB Garrett Schires threw a lateral to the left to wideout and Back-up QB Brian Gulley who lateraled all the way across the field to Imoh. Imoh caught it off one hop and had the whole Robinson offensive line in front of him. Imoh wiggled all the way down to the 5 yard line before being driven out of bounds. Two plays later Schires pulled the ball on the option and dove uncontested over the goal line for a Robinson score.

Blake Schubert made a huge play on 3rd and 4 tackling Smith for a 5 yard loss and forcing them to punt it back to the Rams. Robinson took over on it's own 20 yard line with 2:39 left on the clock. On 3rd and 11 Schires was sacked back to his own 15 yard line setting up a 4th and 15 with just under 2 minutes on the clock. On 4th down speedy linebacker Greg Cannon sprinted untouched off the left side and tackled Schires in the endzone for a safety giving Centreville a 16-7 lead.

The Robinson defense forced Centreville to punt with 18 seconds on the clock. The Rams blocked the punt and Josh Richards recovered it and scored to make the score 16-13 with 12 seconds left.

The first attempt at an onside kick was called back because Centreville was offsides. On the second try the Rams Bijan Enferadi came up with the football and gave Robinson hope. The Rams got two shots at the endzone from the 48 yard line for the title. The first play was tipped up in the air 3 times before falling to the turf. With 2 seconds left Marcus Hamilton intercepted Schires hail mary attempt and the Wildcats could celebrate their 3rd title in as many years. Centreville will host Central Region Champion Varina next Saturday at 1:30 in the Division 6 State Semi-Finals.
